I recently took the plunge and got myself the TETON Sports Mammoth Double Sleeping Bag for my frequent camping escapades. As someone who thrives in the great outdoors, I was in search of a sleeping bag that could withstand the chill yet provide the roomy comfort I crave after a long day of hiking and campfire stories. And oh boy, did the Mammoth deliver!

Unrolling this behemoth was like unveiling a sea of coziness; the sheer size of it is astounding at 94” x 62”, dwarfing my queen-sized mattress at home. It’s no exaggeration to say that this sleeping bag is the epitome of snugness. The SuperLoft Elite Fill is akin to being enveloped in a gentle, warm hug, a feeling reminiscent of sinking into a marshmallow haven. The soft, plush liner is gentle against the skin, providing a comforting embrace as the crickets serenade the night away.

The real test came when the temperatures dipped to near freezing. Rated at 0F, the Mammoth stood tall against the cold night air. The half-circle mummy hood proved to be an ingenious feature, as I tightened it around my pillows, ensuring they stayed put while trapping the warmth. The draft tubes along the zippers and shoulders were an added armor against the cold, a barrier that the chill could not penetrate.

Unzipping and zipping this colossal comfort cocoon was a breeze, gliding smoothly without a snag, which is a far cry from my previous sleeping bags that would catch at every pull. The freedom to unzip from each side or at the bottom was a game-changer, allowing me to regulate the warmth to my liking. On warmer nights, I could unzip it to act as a plush comforter, a feature that made me feel right at home amidst the dense woods.

Now, packing it away was an adventure in itself. The battle to get it back into its stuff sack was akin to wrestling a cloud into a teacup. But with a little patience and teamwork, my buddy and I managed to tame the beast back into its sack. The stuff sack could certainly benefit from a few extra inches, making this task less of a Herculean effort.

While the Mammoth is not the easiest to carry around due to its size, it’s a trade-off I’m willing to make for the luxurious comfort and warmth it offers. It’s the perfect companion for car camping, although a bit of a squeeze in my SUV along with my other camping gear. But once unfurled, it becomes a haven of warmth and comfort that beckons after a day exploring the trails.

The exterior taffeta shell held up well against the rough campground terrain, although I’d have appreciated a tad more water-resistance. Yet, for car and trailer camping, it’s more than sufficient.

The TETON Sports Mammoth Double Sleeping Bag has quickly become a cherished gear in my camping arsenal. Its lifetime warranty is the cherry on top, assuring me of its durability and the quality I’ve come to expect from TETON. It’s a well-designed, comfortable, and value-for-money sleeping bag that has elevated my camping nights to a realm of comfort I hadn’t experienced before.

During a recent weekend escape to the Rockies, the Mammoth was put to the ultimate test. As dusk settled and the temperature plummeted, I was nestled within the gentle confines of this colossal bag alongside my partner. The evening was a symphony of distant howls and rustling leaves, with us as cozy spectators enveloped in a plush haven. As the night drew darker, the mercury dropped, yet inside our Mammoth fortress, the chill was nothing but a myth. The soft flannel lining felt like a warm caress against the night’s cold breath, while the spaciousness allowed us to move freely without feeling confined.

Come morning, the first rays of sun found us well-rested and reluctant to leave the comforting womb of our Mammoth. As I sat by the embers of last night’s fire, sipping on a cup of freshly brewed coffee, I couldn’t help but appreciate the simple joy of a warm, restful night in the midst of the wild. The Mammoth didn’t just provide warmth; it cradled us in a cocoon of comfort amidst the rugged beauty of the Rockies, accentuating the essence of being in the outdoors.

In my quest for a sleeping solution that matches the grandeur and wildness of the outdoors, the Mammoth has proven to be a worthy companion. It’s not just a sleeping bag; it’s a ticket to luxurious slumbers under the starlit sky.

Pros:

  • Spaciousness: With dimensions larger than a queen-sized mattress, it provides ample room for a comfortable sleep.
  • Warmth: Rated at 0F, it’s designed for colder climates, ensuring a cozy slumber even as temperatures plummet.
  • Quality Insulation: The SuperLoft Elite Fill along with draft tubes retains heat efficiently, keeping the cold at bay.
  • Soft Interior Lining: The 100% brushed poly flannel lining provides a soft, plush surface to sleep on.
  • Zipper Design: Smooth zipping and unzipping, with the option to unzip from both sides or the bottom for temperature regulation.
  • Durable Exterior: The taffeta shell is hard-wearing, holding up well to the rough campground terrain.
  • Lifetime Warranty: A testament to its durability and the brand’s confidence in the product.

Cons:

  • Packing Difficulty: Wrestling it back into the stuff sack can be quite a challenge, requiring patience and possibly a helping hand.
  • Bulkiness: Its large size and 16.5 lbs weight may make transportation and storage a bit cumbersome, especially in smaller vehicles.
  • Water-Resistance: The shell could benefit from increased water-resistance for added protection against dampness.
  • Stuff Sack Size: A slightly larger stuff sack would ease the packing process, making it less of a daunting task post-camping.

Buy from Amazon

The Dolomite Double Down by the North Face is a classic rectangular-shaped down sleeping bag that can also be unzipped for use as an insulated blanket. This makes it a nice extra to have in your vehicle when you’re out in the great outdoors, and it can also double up as an extra cozy blanket on winter camping trips.

With a width of 60”, this double bag is available in regular or long, at 77” or 83” respectively, so even if you are fairly tall, you’ll still get a good fit. It weighs approximately six pounds, and fits neatly into its stuff sack, measuring 13” x 24”. This makes it a good lightweight choice, that compresses well, as do most down-filled products.

Rated 20F this sleeping bag can be used through most of the warmer seasons, or most of the year in your vehicle. For cozy softness, it features a brushed polyester taffeta headliner, which is extended throughout the lining. The exterior is embossed 50D ciré polyester taffeta. Its 550 fill certified responsible down filling is soft and highly insulating. However, unlike some other down models, it is not treated with water repellents, making this a better model for RV and truck tents only where it is not going to risk getting damp.

This classic style double sleeping bag doesn’t have many features – there’s an interior pocket for your valuables and a wraparound footbox zipper for ventilation or to lay the bag flat as a blanket. While some users will want more features, others will be happy with this bag’s simplicity and high-quality finish – it all comes down to your personal preferences.

As with all down-filled products, expect to pay quite a bit more than you would for a synthetic version, although there is a lifetime product warranty.

Opt for the best of both worlds with this hybrid down and synthetic fill, three-season sleeping bag.

Featuring a down top and synthetic-fill bottom, this double sleeping bag makes a practical, comfortable choice with a touch of luxury provided by the down upper. You can also fully unzip this section for use as a comforter, or if you get too hot on warm summer nights.

Measuring 82” by 46”, this model is a little narrower than most, however, the tall side baffles increase the actual sleeping area. This makes this model a good choice for a two-person tent, or car camping. Weighing just five pounds, this lightweight model packs down into its 18” x 9” x 9” stuff sack. So, it won’t take up too much space when you’re transporting or storing it.

Rated 30F, this double sleeping bag has an 80/20 down to synthetic fill ratio. The shell features a lightweight 20D nylon that is treated with a DWR to protect the internal down from moisture. Remove the down topper in the heat or use the hood snap to create two individual hoods and reduce drafts on cold nights.

The oversized hood can easily accommodate two large pillows, locking them in place for a comfortable night’s sleep. This model also features a sleeping pad sleeve, keeping your bag securely on your pad while you sleep, as well as full-length dual side zippers.

While this is a well designed, comfortable model, combining the benefits of down with synthetic fibers, for the price, we are a little disappointed that it only includes a two-year warranty. Overall, this is a comfortable, but rather expensive option.

Double Sleeping Bag Comparison Chart

Buyers Guide to Buying the Best Double Sleeping Bag

There are numerous factors to bear in mind when choosing your new double sleeping. Here’s what you’ll need to keep an eye out for when researching your purchase.

Price

Quality comes at a price, and there are a lot of highly-priced, luxury double sleeping bags out there. However, this doesn’t always mean that you’re better off paying top dollar for your double sleeping bag.

First of all, consider how often you will be using your double sleeping bag and in what kinds of conditions. For year-round, frequent use, we recommend upping your budget. However, for occasional summer use, you will find some budget-priced models that will more than suffice.

If you are planning on using your double sleeping bag mainly for car camping or RVing, then you can also opt for lower-priced models that will still be effective in cooler months. However, for cold weather camping, you will want to invest in a more expensive, warmer rated model – or at least some extra layers.

As with most outdoor gear, compressibility and lightweight tend to translate into high prices. So, if these aren’t priorities for you, don’t be afraid to try out models in the mid price range. They can be just as good, or even better suited to your needs as lighter, higher-priced ones.

Lastly, take a look at your sleeping bag’s warranty. It can be well worth paying a premium for a reputable brand with a lifetime warranty. This covers you in case of any defects and these companies tend to put a lot of research and know-how into their products, so you’re sure to get a good value product for your money.

Size, Shape and Weight

Shape comes down to personal preference, do you prefer a classic rectangular shape, or a mummy shape. When you’re sharing a sleeping bag, you may prefer the extra space you get with a rectangular shape – especially if your partner tends to move about a lot.

Otherwise, for cold weather camping or if you both enjoy snuggling up, a tapered mummy shape is ideal. You can pull the hood around your head to trap in extra heat and the tapered shape helps to keep your body heat trapped close to your body for a warmer night’s sleep.

Most double sleeping bags are around the size of an average queen bed. Some versions are a little wider, so if you want a bit more elbow room, then take a close look at the dimensions. The same goes for extra tall people, double-check the height of your sleeping bag, as some manufacturers give a maximum suitable height.

Temperature Rating

Always pay close attention to your sleeping bag temperature rating.

You will need to take into consideration what the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be. Bear in mind that snuggling up as a couple will keep you warmer, but if you’re planning on camping in winter in a harsh climate, you will need a four season double sleeping bag.

You may prefer to invest in two double sleeping bags, one for summer, one for winter, if you tend to camp all year round. Otherwise a good three-season model will do you for most of the year, or for RVing and car camping. Lightweight summer models can be appealing due to their low price, and also double-up as an extra layer in winter.

Remember, the temperature rating is linked to survival, above comfort. So, you should add on another 15-20 degrees to reflect this. For example with a 30F rated sleeping bag you would be cold on a night that went down to 30F, but comfortable at 50F.

Waterproofing

Sleeping in a damp sleeping bag is definitely not the way to go.

While the majority of sleeping bags have some degree of water repellency, if you tent camp you should really look for a model with a DWR (durable water repellent). This finish will stop your sleeping bag getting damp and is a must for anyone who camps outdoors in areas with a wet climate.

If you invest in a down sleeping bag and aren’t using it exclusively in your RV or vehicle, then you should always make sure that it is treated and waterproof. Once down becomes wet it loses its insulating properties and will actually draw heat away from you to dry out. This could lead to hypothermia, or at the very least, a very, very cold and uncomfortable night, even in mild weather.

Rip Resistant

If you enjoy backcountry camping and nights under the stars, you’ll need to make sure that your double sleeping bag is rip-resistant. See below for further information on shell materials, but in general, the higher denier of fabric, the more rip resistant your sleeping bag will be. Ideally look for rip-stop nylon outers that are specially woven to resist tears and wearing.

Compressibility

If you have limited pack space or an already overloaded vehicle, then you’ll need a sleeping bag that is highly compressible.

Down is highly compressible, to take up a minimum of space, but it is rather expensive. However, there are plenty of cheaper synthetic alternatives, that with a little elbow grease, pack down real small into their stuff sacks.

Shell Material

Most sleeping bags are made from nylon or polyester shell materials.

Both are lightweight and can be woven to provide varying degrees of strength and rip-resistance. If you’re likely to be using your sleeping bag in damp conditions, look for one with a DWR finish to protect the filling from getting wet.

When choosing your sleeping bag, take a close look at the denier of the outer material. While higher derniers are stronger and more durable, then can be heavier and more rigid, so there is a trade-off to be made.

Alternatively, if you’re RVing or car camping and you are not likely to be using your sleeping bag outside your vehicle, then you can safely opt for a lower denier.

Insulation Material

Insulation materials basically come down to two main types: down or synthetic.

You can also find a handful of hybrid models that use synthetic for the lower part and down for the upper.

Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of each type:
Down
Pros:

  • Highly compressible.
  • Excellent insulating properties (in cold, dry conditions).
  • Lightweight.
  • Comfortable.

Cons:

  • Expensive.
  • Unsuitable for some people with allergies.
  • Loses insulating properties when wet.

Synthetic Fill Materials
Pros:

  • Cheaper.
  • Fast-drying.
  • Provides some insulation when damp.
  • Hypo-allergenic.
  • Provides more support under the body.

Cons:

  • Less compressible for packing.
  • Heavier than down.
  • Less insulating than down.

For a lot of people, while down is recognized as having a lot of superior properties, it’s unsuitability for damp climates and high price make synthetic versions much more appealing.

Comfort

Comfort comes down to a lot of different factors and is often subjective, what’s comfortable for one person, is less likely to be so for another.

For this reason alone, it can be tricky finding a double sleeping bag that is comfortable for both you and your partner.

To ensure that you find the most comfortable double sleeping bag, take into account how you both sleep. If one of you tends to move around a lot, a rectangular shaped model will be more comfortable for both of you. If you like a thick, luxuriant comforter, try a luxury down version.

For those of you who sleep hot, opt for models that have vents or at least dual-sided zippers so you can get some air without waking up your partner.

Carry Bag

Most double sleeping bags come complete with a carry bag, or stuff sack, for neat, easy storage and transportation. Look for models with cinchable drawstrings and compression straps to make packing up easier at the end of your trip.

Durability and Construction

Pay close attention to how your double sleeping bag is constructed, here are some of the main types.

Layers – Off-set quilt layers are best for cold weather sleeping bags as they ensure that the layers of insulation and the stitching are offset, avoiding gaps where cold could penetrate.

Quilted-through layers are best for warm weather, light sleeping bags as the layers are stitched through one on top of the other, with air able to penetrate through the stitching right into the bag.

Shingles – Shingles are similar to roofing tiles, the insulation material is stitched using overlapping pieces, preventing the formation of any cold spots.

Baffles – Baffles can be placed either horizontally or vertically. They are a series of chambers that attach the inner lining of your sleeping bag to the outer shell. The insulation is trapped in these chambers and unable to move around, thus preventing cold spots from occurring when you move at night.

Additional Features

There are plenty of additional features that may be of interest to you, here are some of the most common:

  • Internal pocket – handy for keeping your valuable close or a mini flashlight.
  • Draft tubes – also known as zipper baffles, these ingenious baffles run the length of your zippers, keeping heat in and cold air out.
  • Double-sided zippers – so you can get in and out without waking your partner.
  • Sleeping pad sleeve – for attaching your sleeping pad when tent camping, this will improve your comfort as you won’t risk sliding off your sleeping pad overnight.
  • Hood – a hood can help to keep your pillows in place. Cinchable versions will also keep you warmer on cold nights, trapping in more body heat.
  • Removable, washable liner – sleeping bags are notoriously difficult to clean, so purchasing one with a removable liner will keep yours hygienically clean and smelling fresh even after years of use.
